You may have heard that the Independent Publishing Resource Center is finally moving from the its west side home, across the river (or, at least, now you have), but Stumptown Underground is inviting you to take one last opportunity to say goodbye to the old space. Appropriately enough, we’ll also be releasing our lastest issue, on the theme of memories and the past. BUT THERE WILL ALSO BE PIZZA, glorious pizza, generously donated by Sizzle Pie.

Our party will be happening March 14th, starting at 7:00pm at Sizzle Pie West (926 West Burnside, just downstairs from the old IPRC and across from Powell’s). We will be kicking off with yummy vegan pizza donated by Sizzle Pie, then, at 8pm, we will be bringing our party upstairs to the empty IPRC for sharing some of favorite IPRC memories with special guests Alex Wrekk and Nicole Georges!

We will also have a giant goodbye card everyone can sign as well as a raffle! Our raffle rewards will be an IPRC membership and Sizzle Pie Gift Certificates. We hope to see you there! Come get the newest issue of Stumptown Underground, share a final goodbye to IPRC, eat some rad pizza, and maybe win something…

We tabled at the first-ever Short Run Small Press Fest in Seattle this past weekend! The Short Run Small Press Fest reminded us a lot of the Portland Zine Symposium in feel, ethics and organization.

Short Run was held at The Vera Project, an all ages, non profit, music and art venue in Seattle Center. We want to give a big thank you to all the organizers who worked hard to keep tabling costs low and admission to the event free, key ingredients to any independently minded festival (as a PZS organizer, Blue can attest to this)!

I (Blue) drove up to Seattle with Emily and Virginia Paine of Sparkplug and tabled for Stumptown Underground, sharing a table with Alex Wrekk.

We met so many people, got a lot of Stumptown Underground zines and information passed out, and had a lot of fun. There were many people checking out Short Run that hadn’t even heard of zines, so it was great to be reaching out to so many new people about independent media. When I talked to organizer Kelly Froh at the end of the day, she said that their count for attendance was 820!

Thank you so much, Short Run! We will want to go again next year, so keep up the good work.

One of our editors, Jon Hallman, volunteers at Title Wave Used Book Store, which has graciously donated three $10 gifts certificates for us to give away in a secrets contest!

We are having a little secrets contest to go along with our upcoming secrets-themed issue. The deadline to submit art, comics, and other longer secrets to that issue is September 23rd.

In the meantime, we’ve made a handy little survey for you to fill out to submit your shorter, juicy secrets to us for a chance to win one of three $10 gift certificates to Title Wave Used Book Store.

Fill out the survey for the secrets contest here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VBDSG6J

The deadline for submitting your secrets online for the contest is also September 23rd, as we will be putting them up to be voted on then.

All submitted secrets will be put up online, without names, to be voted on by anyone. Voting starts on September 24th, online, winning secrets will be announced on October 7th at our release party!

If you do not include any contact information, however, we will be unable to award you any gift certificate. We will be awarding the three gift certificates to the top three submitted short secrets that have included a way to contact them. You are still welcome to submit your secret and have it included online… You know, just for the glory of being voted on and ranked. If you would like to give us contact information to make you eligible to win one of the Title Wave Bookstore gift certificates, please leave your number or email address within the survey.

We will also be including the top 10 submitted secrets in the printed zine. This can be anonymous or not. If you would like your little secret to not be considered for inclusion in print, please indicate that in the appropriate box within the survey. Please also indicate if you would like your name on your little secret in print. We will assume not, otherwise.

Thanks for reading, we can’t wait to see what we get!

Did you know that Stumptown Underground is collectively organized? Well, it is. Each organizer/editor has a say in every decision Stumptown Underground makes, we all pitch in (as we can) to pay for publishing costs (and get reimbursed as we sell issues), we all hand out fliers, we all vote on every submission we receive for each issue, and so on! Right now, two of our organizer/editors are out of the country, we’ve had a couple editors that have moved on, and two editors get really freaking busy every year during the Portland Zine Symposium. So, right now, we’re really feeling the need for extra hands.

If you’re interested in becoming a Stumptown Underground organizer/editor, email us to try it out! All potential new organizer/editors have to be unanimously approved by the current members (we have a tightly-knit crew going on here that works well together, we want to keep it that way) and we’d love to have answers to these few questions when you inquire about joining on our organizer team…

1) What is your creative background?

2) Why does helping with Stumptown Underground appeal to you?

3) What skills/talents do you feel you particularly possess(ways in which you are awesome) that would add to our awesomeness?

We seriously need a couple more DEDICATED and PASSIONATE organizers, so even if you have little experience with zines (organizer Jon was very inexperienced when he joined, now he’s practically an expert), shoot us an email!
