Stumptown Underground will be tabling at the 12th Annual Portland Zine Symposium this weekend. This 2-day conference and “zine social” will take place at the Refuge, 116 SE Yamhill St. The hours are 10am-6pm on Saturday Aug 11 and 10am-5pm on Sunday Aug 12. We hope to see you there!

And after the symposium on Saturday, why not check out this amazing event benefiting the festival? It’s packed with local celebrities, including venerable Stumptown Underground contributor Everett Patterson. Taking place at 7:30pm at Backspace, 115 NW 5th.

It will be raining cats and dogs (and hamsters, goldfish, alligators, chinchillas…) in our next issue: it’s all about our furry (scaly, feathery) friends. No lolcats, please.

We are having a release party for our “Science: Fact and Fiction” anthology, centralized around the themes of science and science fiction, this July 28th and Floating World Comics. The release party is free, all ages, and you’ll be able to meet and greet with the issue’s contributors and purchase copies of “Science: Fact and Fiction” for just $5 and before all your friends!

In addition to being able to pick up the lastest issue, you can meet-and-greet with many of the contributors and other wonderful cretive people. We will have some experimental beverages from the mixologists of Stumptown Underground, both alcoholic and non, for you to enjoy. If you are feeling experimental yourself, show up in your best “Mad Scientist” costume to compete in the party’s “Mad Scientist” costume contest! We’ll have a vote and the top 3 costumes will receive a free copy of the new issue.

Several of the contributors will be reading from their included work in this issue during the party. “Science: Fact and Fiction” is the twenty second zine anthology from Stumptown Underground. In these issue, you’ll find comics, writing, and illustrations from the likes of Everett Patterson, Amy Souza, Tom Eichacker,  Lisa Marshall, James Michael Williams, Lillie Craw, Rachel Dominguez-Benner, Suzette Smith, Asher Craw,  Leda Zawacki, and many other talented folks.

This is also in conjunction with the release of Hazel Newlevant’s Xeric award winning mini-comic, Ci Vediamo. “Ci Vediamo” is an Italian goodbye. Literally, it means “We’ll see each other.” Ci Vediamo the mini-comic is a wordless story of love, loss and moving on. The comic uses overlapping vellum pages to tell the story.

Hazel Newlevant is a Portland-raised cartoonist attending SVA. She is a frequent contributor to Stumptown Underground, and has self-published comics like Curio, Chili Dog Dad, and the faux-children’s book People of Coloring Book. Check out her work at http://newlevant.com/

In light of the low number of submissions on the subject of memory, we’ve decided to make our next zine a “dual-themed” issue! This means a new submissions call for work related to memory, the past, or both. We’re excited about the creative possibilities of this combination, and we plan to explore duality more in future themes. Issue #21 is now scheduled for publication in March.

Short Run was held at The Vera Project, an all ages, non profit, music and art venue in Seattle Center. We want to give a big thank you to all the organizers who worked hard to keep tabling costs low and admission to the event free, key ingredients to any independently minded festival (as a PZS organizer, Blue can attest to this)!

I (Blue) drove up to Seattle with Emily and Virginia Paine of Sparkplug and tabled for Stumptown Underground, sharing a table with Alex Wrekk.

We met so many people, got a lot of Stumptown Underground zines and information passed out, and had a lot of fun. There were many people checking out Short Run that hadn’t even heard of zines, so it was great to be reaching out to so many new people about independent media. When I talked to organizer Kelly Froh at the end of the day, she said that their count for attendance was 820!

Thank you so much, Short Run! We will want to go again next year, so keep up the good work.

Memory is the seed for many stories, but this month we’re looking for stories about memory: recalling, forgetting, nostalgia, amnesia, deja vu – all are welcome!
